Protocol Architecture

The scope of HIPERLAN/2 is a physical layer, a DLC (Data Link Control) layer and a number of network convergence layers (CL).

The introduction of the CL concept was due to the fact that H/2 was initially intended for wireless ATM transmission only. In early 1998 it became clear that ATM will probably not make it to the desktop and that Ethernet and IP, repsectively, will be the technologies of the future. This started a change in paradigm which resulted in this CL which adapts the interfaces of the DLC to those required by the higher layer network
